Everybody go read "Termination Shock" by Neal Stephenson, because apparently that whole scenario is actually about to start happening: https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2025/11/21/stardust-geoengineering-janos-pasztor-regulations-00646414

The episode is called "Jimmy on Ice" for anybody who needs a children's cartoon to break down why this is a bad idea.

@sundogplanets Well, gee. That plan doesn't sound like it could have any unforeseen consequences, does it?

Just less sunlight. On which all life on Earth depends for survival. And no practical way to remove the "tons" of particles if we needed to.

What's that? They'll eventually fall to Earth? Well, that sounds much better. Now we'll just have massive pollution over land, rivers and seas of a type whose effects are as yet unexplored. What could possibly go wrong?

@sundogplanets that was an interesting book but I came away from it with the impression that the author really wanted to contrive a situation where the climax of the book could involve a fight between an Indian (from India) and an Indian (as in Native American).

Yet we cant seem to get going with this.

https://www.gblsim.com/cooling-ultra-white-paint/

White paint has been used for decades to reduce the sun's heat that rooftops absorb, thereby
keeping the building cooler than it would be if painted in a dark color. However, a new ultra-
white paint shows evidence of cooling buildings. In fact, the roof's surface temperature is
lower than the air temperature immediately surrounding the roof.

The cooling is made possible because the new ultra-white paint reflects 98% of the sun's rays
plus sends infrared heat away from the surface. As proof, according to their research, tests
conducted during sunny, midday hours on the roof of a campus building in West Lafayette,
Indiana, the paint kept outdoor surfaces 8 degrees cooler than the surrounding ambient
temperatures. At night, the paint kept surfaces 19 degrees cooler than their surroundings.

Currently, there are white paints on the market made with titanium dioxide, which reflects
specific wavelengths of sunlight. But, they absorb the sun's ultraviolet rays, causing the painted
surface to heat up.
The new paint is made with barium sulfate, a known UV-reflecting compound used in
cosmetics, reflective photo paper, oil paints, x-ray examinations, etc. The barium sulfate
particles in the paint vary in size, making the sun's rays "scatter," explains Xiulin Ruan, a Purdue
mechanical engineering professor.

@sundogplanets @oldguycrusty 20 billion per year seems belony to me.

Nobody really wants #sai but when impact #climatechange becomes devastating it might become our last resort. My blog describes how SAI can cool the earth in 2 years and keep temperature steady even if CO2 keeps rising. We still need to slash CO2, but slower and avoiding collapse
Risks are big, but I have summed them up realistically without all the doom and gloom.
Its last resort time

Please read before you disagree
And sorry, its very long and thorough
