@pluralistic Yeah, I still don't get why gold's price is so high, or, really, higher than more practically-useful metals. I know, I know: The demand in the market determines that price. So how is it really different from fiat money?
@pluralistic Oops - was going to put "supply & demand" in there, too, to try to hit as many bits of common wisdom as possible.
“ But again, these guys were self-aware enough to recognize that the mercenaries might also fail to recognize their unique fitness to rule and opt instead to slaughter them and raid their hoarded food, ammo and medical supplies.”
Recently, I finished a fabulous book which I cannot recommend highly enough “ hierarchy in the forest” this is written by the anthropologist Boehm
The topic is a discussion of the factors that lead to egalitarian or orthodox hierarchical societies..
The interesting bit out of this is that in egalitarian societies, the conditions for which are favored by the ability for people to up and leave, leadership has no course of power really because people can either leave or ignore them or if they create too much trouble ostracized them or if they become a danger kill them.
Rich people in modern society are too used to the idea that they stay on top at the point of a gun.
If they think that way, they are already are not qualified

@pluralistic To what extent is there a widespread awareness that elites _want_ a climate crisis to purge the planet of bad people (mainly brown people)?
Security consulting firms persuaded them their fortunes will protect them in a +2C world. #climatePurge

@pluralistic Library rights have always puzzled me a bit.
I have wondered if SF authors specifically have more leverage than they might think as far as carving out non-exclusive library rights on their own books. Let the publishers bundle but allow authors individually to enable their books to be in libraries.
As a citizen the inability to donate an ebook to a library has similarly frustrated me.
