"I tried, I'm disappointed too, but I wasn't prepared to hold up the entire Arms Act [rewrite] to fight over it, when there's a good win for everybody in it."

I've made some very strong criticisms of this firearms industry lobbyist turned ACT MP. But credit where credit is due; this is a really generous and pragmatic way for a politician to describe not getting exactly what they wanted from a bill.

More of this please.

Having said that, I'm not endorsing anything in McKee's refactored Arms Act. I haven't seen the detail yet.

But I know people who are urban historical collectors, and rural gun owners, and a few that were raided and arrested in Operation 8. So despite being a committed pacifist and vegan, I don't disagree that previous versions of the Arms Act haven't got the balance right between harm reduction and respect for civil liberties.

"The 51 shuhada ... one of the key legacies ... was to make NZ safe, particularly from the menace of the semiautomatic killing machines."

An excellent example here of the point George Orwell was making with NewSpeak; the words used to describe something, determines the starting point for how we think about it.

A gun *is* a killing machine. The normalisation of the word "gun" obscures that.

Focus on Politics also reported that Nicole McKee has;

"... committed a full 6 month select committee process, to hear public feedback on what she's put up."

Unlike many of her NatACT First colleagues, who are happy to bulldoze their deeply unpopular bills through Parliament (*cough* Regulatory Standards Bill *cough*). Blatantly misusing urgency conventions, intended for use in emergency situations like natural disasters, pandemics, or wars.

RNZ aren't exactly known for a pro-ACT or pro-gun bias. So I have no reason to think they're painting an unrealistically positive picture of McKee in this report from FoP.

I'm surprised to say, my opinion of McKee has gone up significantly after hearing it. This is what fair and balanced journalism can do.
