Haha but serious: those fountain pens that cost thousands of dollars are collectible art pieces that aren’t actually optimized for a good writing experience. They’re CEO bait.

Serious hand-writers use fountain pens that mostly cost between $30 and $200. You can get decent ones for $10 but they tend not to be very airtight and quickly dry out.

My #1 practical recommendation is the TWSBI Eco, which is generally around $40 in the west.

Comic with two panels labeled “yes,” and “but.” The first shows a fountain pen on sale for $2065, the second shows it being used for a terrible childish signature. The credit in the corner is to instagram username underscore yes underscore but.

@0xabad1dea Wow, great recommendation - added to my stocking stuffer list!

A different use case ... what would you consider to be a good option for the shorter writing forms - jotting quick notes, etc. for everyday carry in your pocket or purse?

@0xabad1dea would you recommend it for leftys? So, does the ink dry fast that we left handed people don't paint ourselves while writing?

@sturmsucht the ink drying speed is more a factor of the ink itself and the paper, not the fountain pen. the pen only contributes in that you should stick to narrower nibs (EF/F – twsbi eco is available in several nib sizes). avoid inks that are advertised as "sheen", "glitter" or "very wet".

you should search "left handed fountain pen recommendations" for specific pointers from people who actually have, well, hands-on experience.

@0xabad1dea @catsalad I just got myself and my 10 yo grandkid Lamy pens. I've never owned a fountain pen before.

What's next though? Wax seals? 🤔📬

I can definitely put my mouth where my money is re: recommending TWSBI Eco as my #1 practical pen.

No less than six TWSBI Eco fountain pens in different body colors: clear, black, purple, white, mint and orange. They are also filled with different inks visible in their clear barrels.

@0xabad1dea I get the feeling that there's an equivalent inflection point in every tool, where you start to give up usability and function in exchange for luxury for luxury's sake.

there are headphones that cost $5000 and they technically achieve a "perfect" reference response. they get hyped up in product reviews, but every time I've gone and dug further for actual reviews from people who bought them to use them I see similar sentiments: that "perfection" makes them situational and fatiguing.
