I admit that I find it kind of weird when people oppose a government digital ID while they happily accept the digital (shadow) IDs that ad/tracking networks, Facebook, Google, Twitter, Amazon etc already have with less to non-existent oversight and control. #UnpopularOpinion

In many countries you already have a digital government ID, coupled to your passport, your driving license, your social security number. Putting all of these systems under a defined set of rules is a good thing, when those rules follow the laws on privacy etc. That approach is worth an open discussion instead of just shouting NO, NO, NO, in my opinion.
I really miss a nuanced discussion on how to get digital ID done the right way (which in my opinion is a collection of attributes with no possibility of identification. Like a way to share that I am above 18 years without sharing my name, address etc)
The basics have already been implemented, open source and open standards style. Anyone remember the system used to verify if you had a covid vaccination? That system is based on verifiable attributes (vaccinated yes/no) without disclosing any personal details. That system is used in the EU-ID approach.
