I had someone recently ask me, how does anarchism respond to the threat of warlords and mafias?

And I responded that, of course, people should be free and empowered to defend themselves, alone or in voluntary cooperarion.

And he just threw up his hands and said, oh great, so we’ll all just kill each other.

And I don’t think that it occurred to him for even the barest of moments that “people kill each other” is the beating heart of every state that has ever existed.

“It would be terrible under anarchism because people would just kill each other!” exclaimed the man who lives in a world in which militaries armed with nuclear weapons exist and in which nuclear weapons have been used in war.
