I've updated the guide on how to transfer your Mastodon account from one server to another:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server

It now has an additional step where you switch off email notifications for new followers on the account you're moving to.

Apparently some people have been receiving lots of email notifications for new followers when they've transferred followers over. For some reason no one has raised this issue before, but it seems to have happened to a number of people.

@FediTips

In the "how to choose a new server to migrate to" section, I would recommend opening the server's global feed to see what posts are federated to it (i.e. what accounts people on that server follow) and local feed to see what people on that server post as a vibe check.

@FediTips Thanks! I guess I should have said something when it happened to me. I spent a lot of time deleting messages.

You've probably seen Tim Bray's article promoting Mastodon:

https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2025/11/03/Time-to-Migrate

It's obviously good and on point. However, the default link he uses to promote it is to the joinmastodon one, which you have recently pointed out the downsides to.

I certainly don't intend to tell you what to do, but it occurred to me that you might want to comment on Tim's post regarding that issue.

Thanks for everything that you do for the fediverse!

@FediTips I just disabled it right away so I never even thought to report it. I just kinda assumed.

@FediTips

If the new account has the setting that follows have to be approved, the instruction might advice to either turn off emails for those too, or to temporarily change that setting for migration time.

@project1enigma

I don't think the follow transfer process involves requests, if you've already approved their follow on the previous account?

@FediTips In my experience it does involve follow requests.
