One for all of you anxiety-heads out there. In the summer, I'd just finished my first really good group trail run and was chatting with some of the guys and feeling like I belonged with people for the first time in a while. One of them casually mentioned they were all going to watch England play rugby and did I want to go. I said of course, yes, not really thinking about it, or thinking it was a throwaway invite and they probably wouldn't be able to get tickets. Certainly not enough for everyone, so I could show my willingness to participate but without actually having to. Win/win.

The next day he messaged to say he'd got my ticket and I needed to give him £150 within the next 2 days.

Panic

So I borrowed the money to pay, because I reasoned that I can't say I want a ticket then immediately after he's bought one tell him I can't afford it. I then sidelined it as a problem for another day, subconsciously hoping for global obliteration. Then my whole family books a weekend away. I can't go because of this bloody ticket. But that's fine. Means they can all go in one car and we all get a breather from each other (which frankly I need). Bit sad, but it's OK.

But I still have the issue of this ticket. I cannot afford it. I don't know anything about the current team or who's doing well or who's doing badly. I have no stories. I don't know what to wear. I need a haircut. What if I'm weird and they don't like me. Woooosaaaaah.

Normal chaotic anxiety thoughts that normally subside.

Then it occurs to me today (as I realise the inevitability of it and start to spiral a little) that one option available to me that I hadn't considered is that I could...... just go and have a good time? Is that something I'm allowed to do? Seems like that's for other people. How does one do that? Just travel somewhere with a bunch of well-meaning strangers, have a couple of beers and shout at some men on a field, along with a hundred thousand other people (I don't understand stadium capacities).

So I think I'm going to try and stop being a hurricane of neurotic overthinking and just go into the day with an open mind. It will be OK and I might - if I'm very lucky - even have a good day and a formative experience.

I share this stuff to get it out so it doesn't fester - I can't be the only person who feels like this?

MH, long

@TheBreadmonkey

As long as you remember to cheer for England & not the mortal enemy of the day, & boo all referee decisions against England, you'll fit in just fine.

No-one will care about your hair. Wear clothes suitable for the weather. Don't paint a flag on your chest & strut about with your shirt off. Or do, if that's your thing. People will notice that person more than long jacket wearing Ben, chomping a toothpick.

Have fun

"What if I'm weird and they don't like me."

this is negative self talk. show yourself more respect

random strangers on the internet like you, I'm sure these people who made the effort to ask for your company in meat space like you too

it sucks if you can't afford it, and if you can't do it for whatever reason, but life will move on

I'm not really a sports person myself

don't let anxiety rob you of what might actually be a fun adventure though

just be you. that will always be enough for anyone worth a damn

go or do not go. follow your heart. I trust it. why cant you?

@TheBreadmonkey Yep, despite the overthinking, just crack on and do it. You'll have a great day, Twickenham on a big day is *bonkers* and full of people worth watching and laughing with (or at).

Embrace the ignorance. Ask dumb questions. Cheer, groan, shout, say "ooooooh!" a lot, sing songs if you know the words and hum if you don't.

This coming from someone who has a guest ticket for an enormous concert at Wembley Arena soon but doesn't know whether to go or not...

@TheBreadmonkey Same here, this has been me forever.

I can generally mask my way through most any situation, but the internal mental prep can be exhausting. I’ve never been a big sports guy, so masking into that world tends to be super difficult.

FYI I’m freshly self-diagnosed #AuDHD, which has pretty much explained everything about my own lifelong weirdness!

I'm fairly newly minted aswell and just wanted to say I saw this and your profile and had an extremely similar reaction. So just wanted to send you all the very best. Finding out after a lifetime of otherness and being sure you're wrong and different and broken inside, then being told you're just wired up a bit differently and that there are lots of other people like you. Big massive huge disgusting love to you. May you find peace and tranquility. ❤️

@TheBreadmonkey Omgs NO you aren't the only one. I overplan for EVERYTHING and have a hard time going with spontaneous invites (though I do encourage my friends to keep trying). I worry over every little contingency, too. I am a mess, and it is perfectly okay!

@TheBreadmonkey Dude, we all feel it. Some are better than others at ignoring the overthinking voices. Go ahead and have fun. Your buddies will share their extensive knowledge with you (they're sports nerds, after all), and you'll get to bond with them.

Also, for next time, remember: You are in control. You can tell those nagging little voices to shut the hell up. You might have to do it a few times, but they'll eventually fade. :-)

@TheBreadmonkey Turns out this is exactly the same error that I made last year, only it was buying weed.

For your type of situation...that sort of thing with me is almost entirely masking. I "have fun" while I'm there. I will ask the stupid questions and take the gentle ribbing...it's alright. Everyone that watches sports has to "learn" for the first time.

It's the crash afterward that I dread.

Or you could tell the person you can't go due to a family commitment, sell the ticket online and pay back the debt.

Then you could go away with the family IF you want to.

@TheBreadmonkey I hope you get to have fun! Ive followed international rugby on and off, I dont really care about sport or rugby generally, but honestly sometimes its nice to be in a big bunch of people where theres zero expectation of chat, and every now and again give a big roar with everyone. Kind of like choir, but less musical. Genuinely hope you have a nice day of 'protect the precious egg', but I echo other people's warnings about the price of a Twickenham pint #ActuallyAutistic

@TheBreadmonkey Well as you may know, last time I had something planned with a bunch of strangers (weaving workshop last Saturday) I chickened out and didn’t go. Which I now sort of regret. It’s hard. Especially when you feel like you have sort of inadvertently trapped yourself in something. But! I think the fact that he went out of his way to get you a ticket so quickly means that he thinks you’re an OK guy and he would like to hang out with you. I know blokes aren’t very good at just saying that to each other but it seems like that’s the message. So I say go, you may make some new friends, get a little breathing space from the family. You don’t ever have to do it again if you don’t want to. Tom sometimes goes to international rugby matches and says the atmosphere is absolutely amazing

@TheBreadmonkey have a good time! :)

I've learned over the years to be a bit careful when given invitations, and ask some questions first! I do find it a bit 'rude' that they didn't mention to you that tickets are SUPER EXPENSIVE! usually before spending money on someone's behalf, you mention the price to them, no??

@TheBreadmonkey My experience of going to Twickers (or HQ as it's known by the proper rugger buggers apparently - just in case that's where you're actually going) is that roughly 50-60% of the people there will be, like yourself, not regulars at going to rugby matches.
A lot of hospitality, LinkedIn sorts playing at being rugby fans for the day.

You will watch the match and wonder why the ref whistled and stopped the play then, look at the screens and try to work it out, oooh and aaah, and wonder what is happening now, and drink beer and laugh and cheer and be absolutely fine, along with the other 40-50,000 people who don't go to rugby matches often.
