A lot to unpack here:
Post
Something from the "things you can't believe you didn't see when you were walking in the other direction" department.
Now, we only need snow.
@mina turns out it's some kind of ride where you sit in a big inner tube or something, and they spin you and you slide down. There's a beer garden at the bottom, I assume as the evening progresses some patrons will be unable to stop themselves and take a spinny ride.
I pity whoever has to clean the slope tomorrow...
Ok Fediverse, I need to head back and get ready to go meet some local Fedinauts, I think I managed to avoid all but one of your amazing recommendations, for which I am truly sorry.
I kept running into interesting looking things to do, so I now have a great list for my next visit!
I have found Media Markt.
Please excuse the passing van.
@jaz terrible misspelling, clearly it should say "milves"
@jaz ...and this bus.
Mission accomplished! I am once again the owner of headphones. Was unsure between Bose and Pixel Buds, chap at the till said he has some Sony ones he's personally very happy with. I sized him up, seemed like a very insightful fellow, I went with his recommendation.
Never had in-ear before, looking forward to trying them out.
@jaz do ya figure it's "drop-off" or "pick-up"?
On a less serious note... nice touch, Spy Museum (chef's kiss)
@jaz I went to the spy museum in Tampere and only when I was halfway round did I realise I wasn't supposed to be taking pictures and posting them on (then) Twitter.
So technically I was spying on the spy museum.
@llamasoft_ox You should have gotten a a full refund for pulling off the mission
@jaz Or at least one of those cool spy hats.
Note to self: tell everyone at #Berlin #DisinfoCon tomorrow to spend 30 minutes at the last display in the Deutsche Spionagemuseum Berlin
@jaz I went there last time I was in Berlin, and it was very cool!
P.S. ever read the Mitrokhin files? I ended up open mouthed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitrokhin_Archive
@j12t oohh, now I got some reading to do...
My super interesting factoid for today was finding out the torch in the statue of liberty has been closed to visitors ever since a massive sabotage munitions explosion during WWI
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Tom_explosion
I mean, I know it's closed, never knew why.
The answer is (C)
(I can't transcribe this well in the phone, would love some help)
@jaz OPEN DATA
The end of the Cold War in 1990 plunged the intelligence community into an identity crisis - if there were no more enemies, did we really need spies anymore? The emergence of new threats especially after 11 September 2001 made clear that not only did we still need spies, but that they had not always proven successtul in recent times. 1/3
@jaz Counter-terrorism agencies have considerable legal powers and new digital methods with which to gather information about ordinary citizens. Indeed a recent crop of whistle-blowers have shown how far spies actually go in order to carry out their work and which laws they break. Whether investigating allied powers or even their own citizens there seems to be little that intelligence services will not do. 2/3
So I've stood here a few minutes now and watched three people type in their passwords.
Hmmmm.
@jaz
Also showing they have a single password for everything 😂
I am now in the spy museum, and I think I have some vital resources for @evan with regard to E2EE for the Fediverse.
The year is 1740, and King Frederick II teaches the peasants how to play pétanque using potatoes
@jaz why not use apples? You know, tree potatoes?
@michaelmissing potatoes already "know" the ground.
Geocaching is a great introduction to a new place 🤔
