@hipsterelectron FYI, there are link codes to do evolution trades if you don't care to trade back. AustinJohnPlays on YouTube has a video about them. That said, I could probably help later today assuming my spouse doesn't suddenly decide she wants to play.
@vtrlx hmmmmmm i am definitely intrigued by the idea of not inducing external dependencies and would very much like you to have that experience with your spouse. thanks!!
@hipsterelectron I don't think I understand what you mean by this.
@vtrlx that is because i was spluttering nonsense
@hipsterelectron Ah, well, that's quite alright. Hope you're feeling better today.
@vtrlx oh wait this is such a neat idea wow
cc @vtrlx i spent an unnecessarily long time trying to catch mons with good IVs before learning that's what bottle caps are for
@hipsterelectron Yeah, Hyper Training is pretty great. It's nice that, for the first time ever I think, Game Freak actually tweaked the odds of getting rewards online, so now getting 1st or 2nd in a ranked battle have really solid odds of yielding Bottle Caps.
@vtrlx the odds are INCREDIBLY good
@vtrlx i think they've managed to create a ridiculously effective game here it's 30000000x better than UNITE which also had crazy lag at all times. somehow they've managed to make that imperceptible now although i think the latency of each move is sufficiently long to produce that result
@vtrlx i am holding myself away from it for the time being as it's extremely addictive and i consistently find real-time battle is not at all my strong suit
@vtrlx i am incredibly impressed how this unifies the legends arceus prototype battle system, the previous attempt with UNITE, and the existing EV/IV/nature system. not surprised they didn't implement abilities and limited the available moves as i have attempted to implement a battle engine twice and abilities and move effects are by far the most difficult to codify
@vtrlx it's also really fascinating how the complexity of the type advantage + switching system is a very natural counterpart to the way maps work in games like valorant. that complexity (and the necessity for an entire team of players) gets somewhat folded into a single actor
@vtrlx i think a "doubles" format with two players to a side would be really fascinating and allow for helping hand-like tactics but also not surprised that's not part of the initial offering
@vtrlx i thought UNITE was a complete joke and didn't understand why they were putting it alongside the tcg and vgc. did not at all see the vision. i don't really know how a series like pokemon can possibly have another breakout moment when it's already so ubiquitous but my god. the people who worked on this were really really thoughtful
@vtrlx doesn't switch 2 have a builtin proprietary comms system? that would make perfect sense for the doubles format but especially with the dlc landing in december i hope they don't push too fast with expanding the format until the infrastructure is stable
@vtrlx there is exactly one bug i reliably experience with 3d motion which continuously interrupts forward motion and quits the running pace unless i constantly wiggle the joystick but i've found it can be solved by putting the console to sleep (doesn't matter how long) and the issue goes away within minutes. given that it only triggers after multiple real-life hours of in-game walking/travelling it would honestly make sense if it were intentionally built in to represent the effects of sleep deprivation
@vtrlx the fact that putting the console to sleep fixes it without exiting the game makes me feel like it's some sort of memory leak but it's also not clear why the fix works gradually and not immediately. regardless it's just ridiculously impressive to ship what seems to be a completely new engine with latency-sensitive networking support which just fucking works even on hardware that's several years old
@hipsterelectron game freak has been incrementally updating the same codebase since gen 3, it's been pretty much ship-of-theseus'd several times over but based on leaks gen 9 still had some #ifdef SAPPHIRE
