Huh. Did you know that Portland, Detroit, Ypsilani, Seattle & Long Beach (WA) have free payphones? They're run by an indie organisation called Futel. You can visit the phone booth, make a call and that will connect you with an operator who will help you connect further:
"We do not judge the motivations of our users, or who they choose to call; if they don鈥檛 have someone to call, we can provide a presence on the other end."
They also have a zine called Party Line that archives their operator logs.

He also runs a Little Free Failure of Capitalism box at one of the payphone spots (42nd Ave S, north of Myrtle) which works as a distribution point for community necessities like hygiene supplies, Narcan, seeds, zines, masks, rain ponchos etc
I did not expect to find all this out via a secondhand clothing magazine! But this is why I paid $20 for this thing. It's so well put together.
