Information Is Beautiful

A woman's age vs. the age of the men who look best to her vs the same chart for men.
(classic #dataviz of @Okcupid data)

Scatter plot comparing preferences related to age. The top graph shows a woman's age versus the age of the men she finds visually appealing, generally following a diagonal line with small deviations. The bottom graph shows a man's age versus the age of the women he finds visually appealing, with a strong preference for age 20, regardless of his own age.

@infobeautiful for an account called "information is beautiful" the graph severely lacks information which statistics is used (mean? median? mode?) and any measure of how the responses of the men and women were spread. from the jitters alone one can guesstimate stat. uncertainty but not how the shape of the distributions change over y … can we have that in box plots? and as hinted at by others broken down for respondees' relationship status?
…
actually just delete the post. it's not good dataviz

@infobeautiful so, essentially, all men on OKCupid are creeps...especially the older ones.

@infobeautiful Wait, so this is based on real data!? I thought it was a meme chart, made up to deliver a punchline!

I will point out, for the sake of general peace of mind, that data gathered on preferences by dating sites is strongly biased towards the preferences of those who have *failed* to find, keep, and/or be loyal to a partner.

@infobeautiful men are pigs. 🐷 Yes, I'm a dude.

I am reminded of an old Larry Miller joke: "If women knew what men were REALLY thinking, they would NEVER stop slapping us."
