People with self-hosted photo storage: I'm considering moving from #Photoprism to #Immich. Any experiences with that (or with either of these)?

For context: I know that you can run both in parallel, but that feels like more bother than it’s worth, and getting trivial non-hacky upload in itself is enough reason to move (and that's without mentioning that Immich just seems on a much better trajectory as a project).

Addendum: experiences with using internal vs external libraries with Immich?

@rixx I'm very happy with immich, imported my (google photos) library with immich-go.

It has now officially reached "stable". Even before that I didn't have data-loss issues at all, just inconsistencies in the mobile app, which are now gone.

@rixx using immich for 2Y now, it's pretty good and as you said has made some leaps during that time. Selfhosting it (docker compose) is unproblematic in my experience. I wish it had some additional features surrounding sharing and ideally federation. It's great that it's receiving funding, though idk a lot about FUTO and their interests. I have no experience with photoprism.

@rixx Have been using it since January (switched from Google Photos). It's working great so far.

The update frequency can get a whee bit annoying and currently not automated by watchtower, but that's gotten better the past few months too and with way less breaking changes. I have it set up in a Docker container on my Synology 918+ NAS.

@rixx Quite happy with it, also the iOS app has improved a lot recently.
With a medium sized library (53k photos, 1k videos) it consumes up to 4Gi of RAM (+ some for Redis and Postgres) though.

@rixx I didn't even know Immich existed and use Photoprism for now. I'm interested in hearing why you'd want to switch? Maybe I need to as well?

@jefklak Combination of factors, including:

· Immich has higher development velocity
· Immich does not gate features (including “hardened security“) behind payment, which is hella wtf, Photoprism
· Immich vibes are better, and I know more people using it and being happy with it
· Immich has its own phone app, and since >95% of my photos are on my phone, that’s great
· Better multi-user system/support
· Call me shallow, but it’s prettier and easier to use

@rixx using I'm mich here but not fully productive yet. I like the program but still need to setup my infrastructure to really trust the system.

@Fripi I'm currently importing my existing photos (~50G), and am planning to just run a borg backup against the Immich data with sensible retention etc. Feels like that ought to be good enough (hopefully).

@rixx my aim was to have a second server at another location for handover if needed. Might just be too much work, but somehow I liked the idea 😅

Also I am having trouble with the app not uploading everything, I am not sure why so far :/

@rixx @Fripi Immich has a good daily database dump and backup feature, so you can backup the database dumps, and also backup the upload or library folders. I personally use Kopia for these daily backups to NAS, but it's all the same. There is also a storage template folder/file naming system you can turn on for the uploads, which really cleans up that folder well.

@rixx I have immich, and it's ok, but the mobile app mental model is ... weird. Like, it assumes that the only way to use it is to have your phone fully synched to immich. So, more like a backup solution rather than a photo showcase/gallery. There's no "share to ..." handler for individual files.
(The documented workaround is to mark your primary camera folder as synchronized, then disable automatic synchronization for it, and manually start synchronization on individual files.)

@henryk But I can still delete photos on the phone without the delete syncing to the server, right?

@rixx Just tried it: Yes. The photo will still appear in the immich mobile app next to all the other phone photos, but with a subtly different icon.

@rixx following with interest. I recently started paying for Ente (which is also self hostable) because didn't have time to figure out the self hosting.

@plaindocs Ente would be cheaper than what I'm currently paying for my image server fwiw, so that's probably the wiser choice!

@rixx I'm using Immich, it's been mostly great. The mobile app can be a bit laggy, and partner sharing is a little bit complicated to set up (and has weird effects in the timeline, if you enable showing your partners pictures there).

Other than that it's very good, and getting better with every release.

@rixx I started with photoprism and then tried running immich in parallel to see what it was like. Ultimately, I didn't like the fact that there is (was?) no good way to transfer over the album organization. Immich also long claimed instability and I didn't want to lose data.

@rixx I consider switching from PhotoPrism to Immich. Since I can’t manage to run PhotoPrism in stable manner. The container need manual restarting every other day.

@daccle My container is super stable with no problems, but I find the image upload annoying, and also dislike their development model. Gating login/security features behind payment is just yikes, and Immich development seems good.
