Every journey in Europe should be a safe one 🚗🏍️🚴‍♂️🏃‍♀️🚶‍♂️

In 2024, 19,940 people lost their lives in road crashes across the EU, a 2% drop compared to 2023.

We are not yet where we want to be, but it shows that we are moving in the right direction: Towards our Vision Zero goal of halving road deaths and serious injuries by 2030 and getting close to zero by 2050.

At 45 deaths per million inhabitants, EU roads still remain among the safest in the world.

Every life saved counts.

Bar chart titled “Changes in road deaths from 2019 to 2024.” Most EU countries show decreases in road deaths, represented by green bars. The largest reductions are in Poland (–35%), Estonia (–33%), and Slovenia (–33%). A few countries show increases, highlighted in red: Ukraine (+33%), Ireland (+22%), and Spain (+2%). The European Commission logo appears in the bottom right corner.

@EUCommission 2019-2024 includes the Covid lockdown years.
Are these figures the numbers of deaths in 2024 cf the number of deaths in 2019 - thus excluding the Covid effect - or are they some sort of year-on-year average?

@EUCommission Road deaths are a very crude indicator of road safety. We need to be looking at serious injury rates and we also need to look at modal share - if nobody is walking or cycling because of unsafe roads, you are going to have fewer deaths and serious injuries, but that doesn't mean you have safer roads.

@EUCommission Please correct your ALT-text. 🇪🇪 = Estonia, not Ukraine (that's 🇺🇦 and it is not part of the EU, as you should know).

@EUCommission relative numbers here are pretty misleading I think? The Dutch are known for human-first city design and they were doing some of the best urbanism since a while already, so it’s probably harder to improve further from that position.

A country with 1000 traffic fatalities every year has the same 0% change as a country with zero deaths the whole time around.

@EUCommission Um. +33%, that's not Ukraine, as your Alt-Txt claims.

@EUCommission

Imagine if everybody who could, would take the commuter train or cycle, or both. Would not only reduce the 45 deaths per million inhabitants from roads, but likely also make a significant dent into the EU average of 3364 deaths per million inhabitants yearly from cardiovascular diseases alone (2022):

I.e., merely sitting in a car is also deadly.

The EU just allowed massively unsafe US cars on our roads -that do to have to follow our safety standards for pedestrians and cyclists- in order to appease Trump.

I love the EU and its institutions. This unnecessary appeasement however makes me angry as fuck.

@Pepijn @EUCommission This is very disappointing indeed. These cars are unsafe and will unnecessarily endanger cyclists and pedestrians.

@ClaudetteK @Pepijn @EUCommission

We should just level the competitive playing field by banning these monsters from the road in the U.S. and the EU. These murder-vehicles shouldn’t be on any roads.
