Looking at pictures of downtown Denver from the early 20th century I was struck by how Denver’s vast electric trolley system played so nicely with both human and equine pedestrians. The spacious streets, initially designed to allow large herds of cattle to be driven through them, don’t seem wide at all today, so bloated are these dangerous machines we drive through them now. #WarOnCars

In 2024, 19,940 people lost their lives in road crashes across the EU, a 2% drop compared to 2023.
We are not yet where we want to be, but it shows that we are moving in the right direction: Towards our Vision Zero goal of halving road deaths and serious injuries by 2030 and getting close to zero by 2050.
At 45 deaths per million inhabitants, EU roads still remain among the safest in the world.
Every life saved counts.
Imagine if everybody who could, would take the commuter train or cycle, or both. Would not only reduce the 45 deaths per million inhabitants from roads, but likely also make a significant dent into the EU average of 3364 deaths per million inhabitants yearly from cardiovascular diseases alone (2022):

I.e., merely sitting in a car is also deadly.

This article about the infamous "Central Motorway" in Newcastle is proper carbrained. The Central Motorway and the other car-centric changes made in the 60s and 70s almost ruined the city and we're only gradually recovering and making the city centre walkable, rather than an absolute car sewer. Thank god the whole insane scheme with the elevated walkways and stuff never went into effect.

OW: Do you think it is wise to have 7 vehicles lined up along the side of a busy two lane road blocking the walkway for old folk and children ?
CW: Well there's no place to park
OW: So, you are going to tell me that you expect seniors with mobility assistive devices, and small children on bikes, to walk or ride in the traffic lane while cars and transport trucks are travelling at 65 kms/hr?
Worker: Well there's no place...
OW (pissed off more) : Stop there. I am not interested in hearing excuses! You are literaly two houses from the corner where there is a subdivision, where everyone has a driveway so the street is clear for parking, and you are going to stand there and carsplain there is no place to park? You can't walk from there to your jobsite? How can you work in construction if you can't walk half a block? When at home, do you drive your car to the bathroom? Please get your supervisor right now.
Worker: We didn't think that...
OW: It's obvious you all didnt' think now please get your supervisor or provide the phone number of your company.
Supervisior approaches with two men: We are moving the trucks tright now, Ma'am.
OW: Thank you .
