Given the drama surrounding the arXiv for its dependence on Google and its recent ban on review articles in computer science, I have a question:

Do we still need the arXiv?

Wouldn't a federated network of institutional repositories be a much better option?

@hweimer Hey 🙂 I was just pointed towards your post because I'm building @encyclia, however I think the work of @jonny and team over at https://sciop.net is ultimately more relevant than mine.

Basically yes, most of us agree that we want a heterogenous landscape of interoperable repositories for research artifacts (articles, data, software, etc), and yes, some people are working on it.

@julian @encyclia @jonny

I think the people to get on board for this are libriarians at universities and research organizations. Preferably of those currently funding the arXiv.
