The place I stayed in Taiwan had a neat way of providing coffee in the rooms, which didn't require a machine that consumed non-recyclable pods. It came in things like tea bags with some card on the side that held them above a mug. You tore off the top and then mounted them across the top of the mug, then poured hot water through them. They work just like a coffee filter. I believe the bags should be compostable.

I've not seen them anywhere else, but they were a much better option than providing instant coffee (which is a crime against humanity) if the only equipment in a room is a kettle.

The instructions were pretty bad (I didn't take a picture of the illustrations, but they were not helpful). And trying to figure them out with machine translation before drinking coffee was a bit tricky.

The filter bag in use. Water is going through the coffee grounds and dripping into the mug.

The bag torn open and attached to one side of the cup. You can see coffee in it. The other handle (for attaching the filter bag to the other side of the cup) is not yet in use.

@david_chisnall They're available in every convenience store and supermarket in Japan. They're a fantastic invention!

Not quite the same but useful when away from my own kitchen. My daughter doesn’t drink coffee so I keep a box of these at hers

Something similar is available in Denmark, I use them for camping as well. Use your own ground coffee, pour water slowly, takes about a minute for a full cup.

Solos coffee filters, like an empty tea bag you fill with your own ground coffee.

@mjack The pictures in the instructions for these looked like that, so it took a bit of thinking to figure out that you could attach them to both sides of the cup and make them stable. And that thinking had to happen before coffee, which was just unfair.

I see. They could have added instant coffee, as kindle or first stage 😉

@david_chisnall quite common in Japan too. You can get them here in the US too. They’re perfect for camping.
