Hebden Bridge has lost a phone mast. No prior warning just everyone on some networks like O2 just losing signal overnight. But hey the Government wants us all to have digital ID so that’s alright even if we can no longer even access the internet! #rural #connectivity #DigtialID

Properly implemented digital ID keeps working even without a network connection. Which also means it can identify you without any need to communicate your identification event to the government.
@JamesBaker Sounds like something that @9600 might want to fix with a small cell or two.
(Edit - not the digital ID but the loss of connectivity)
@JamesBaker France has the stupidest digital ID system. You can have your national id card or driver’s license in digital form in your phone. But you ALSO need to carry the actual physical document with you. Because in case of control, cops will validate your digital ID against your physical one. 🤷♂️
@JamesBaker I live in one of the richest parts of the richest region in the UK. We still have only intermittent phone signal. Anything based on universal coverage is pie in the digital sky.
@robparsons it’s hard for example when you need to pay for a parking space and it requires an app and then you can’t even get a signal to pay. Connectivity is a major barrier to everything fully digital.
@JamesBaker @robparsons and with extreme weather events likely to increase, we can look forward to even less relative connectivity, I would say.
@JamesBaker @robparsons lots of parking apps are region locked in the app stores so roaming tourists can't install them even if the signal was good enough.
