The AI industry wants us to believe AI superintelligence is the real threat from generative AI.

But that narrative was crafted to distract from the many ways genAI is being used to tear our societies apart, as we saw this week when a deepfake video rocked the Irish election. It must be reined in.

Generative AI is a societal disaster

Governments are deluding themselves into believing investment justifies allowing AI to upend society

@parismarx not only a societal but an environmental disaster. The only way to stop them is to stop using their products. Let them run dry.

I agree about almost everything except the starting point - that a super intelligence is a ridiculous possibility. It's missing the point to say there will never be a human-like intelligence or cognition.

The systems are getting more capable and can do things that were not previously able to be done. Whether that's the real threat or a distraction is up for debate but dismissing the technology itself is short-sighted.

@parismarx ROFL, the one thing I'm *not* worried about with genAI is actual "intelligence".

@parismarx This is 100% true.

Silicon Valley flooded our media sphere with two ”combative” narratives, which BOTH assumed superintelligence was both inevitable and coming very soon.

Of course the corporate media is to blame for eating it up wholesale without any critique whatsoever.

Which speaks of a more serious prevailing problem of slave morality when it comes to Silicon Valley at large.

The worship of billionaire will be the end of us all.

But... But... But.... If I don't use "AI" how will I ever demolish the environment while churning out mountains of garbage based on stolen content and forgetting how to actually do anything?!?!?!

"I used AI to....", is nothing more than, "Listen I'm not an asshole but....", for the 21st Century.

@parismarx isn't that basically how disruptive things work? oh the cars will destroy all the horse drawn carriages, this is an old fear that is ungrounded in reality as we have seen on countless occasions, instead maybe accept change and look at all the opportunities. ai needs oversight like anything else but it is not an exception, ireland is a tech hub now thanks to generous tax laws, somehow it may be appropriate #blarney

@parismarx it's quite rightly a scandal, though it won't have slowed Catherine Connolly down much.

However Ireland needs to get this nipped in the bud before the next general election in 2030.

General elections have a lot more candidates, and a lot more variability, so a few hundred votes could be the difference between a candidate getting a seat or not.

A constituency will have many seats and there can be over 10 rounds of transfers of votes from disqualified candidates.
