Bill Maher prides himself on avoiding ideological capture. But his take on Gaza is pretty much the standard, ahistorical IDF apologetics, and his comments on trans rights are similarly the standard Republican talking points.

I do agree with him though that people need to be free to express this stuff, otherwise they end up thinking they're part of a "silent majority" rather than diseducated by electoralist propaganda.

Picking what looks like the mid-point between extremes (centrism) means your view is shaped by whoever gets to define the spectrum of possible positions and it's "extremes" This is the definition of ideological capture.

I know of only 1 effective way to avoid it; refusing to commit to a hard position on any issue. At least without carefully investigating the available facts (historical, scientific, etc), and weighing up the logic of the arguments from all sides (there are always more than 2).
