Dale Luck, one of the engineers who designed the Amiga, let me touch the Lorraine, the first working prototype.

I am a happy man.

When I come down from nerd heaven I'll make an extensive thread about it, with plenty of pictures and loads of alt text for those who cannot see them. I want to share this joy with everybody.

#Amiga #Amiga40

A picture o Lorraine, the first Amiga prototype, made of dozens of breadbords, filled with discrete components and connected by thousands of individual wires. The breadbards are grouped together like large electronic books into the three Amiga custom chips, withe the CPU sitting in a separate motherboard. Large ribbon cables connect the breadboard books to the motherboard

Oh wire wrapping! Love it. I used to find that process very therapeutic and zen...

@gabrielesvelto I always wonder on these discrete/wirewrap prototypes with long cables - did they have to clock them much slower to get them to work, and if so how much slower?

@TomF from their description of the demos they were running on this thing it must have run at the target clock. I'll ask them tomorrow because I'm also curious about it.
