What's the vibe on #Reticulum, folks?
@noracodes I guess the question is compared to what?
What makes #Reticulum a little confusing is that it is a network stack which supports various applications, and runs on various interfaces, including radio, Internet networks, serial cables, etc.
That makes it harder to understand than Meshtastic, where it's very clear what you get: plain old text chat.
Reticulum can do more today, and way more in the future. I haven't used it yet, but I'm planning to...
@noracodes https://loramesh.org has some builds etc.
@noracodes But if you are more of an experimentative techie, there is much to be discovered in nomadnet
Also, some rescue-NGOs based their communications ship <-> server on R, circumventing much of these problems to leverage the extreme possibilities! So it does the job, but in a completely different way than expected
@noracodes Also the lack of leadership, too much fragmentation and no clear combined effort to fill the holes, mainly single-person projects (f.e. 4-5 implementations of R, not one of them complete).
I hate to say it, but I'm not sure R will reach a usable state suitable for widespread adoption.
It is one of my favorite piece of tech! Thats why this outlook makes me so sad... ._.
@Qapy Ah, yeah, that answers my questions. Thank you.
@noracodes Its the coolest thing! Sadly somewhat incomplete, so it can't be used to its potential. Still some major dealbreakers left:
- no (good) Smartphone Apps
- no native multicast (for groupchatst etc)
- no complete implementation suitable for microcontrollers (so you can't build a solarpowered mesh like we do with #meshcore right now)
