Touchscreens are great unless you want accurate text entry or a screen that is ever clean and free of human finger oil and dirt, even for a single second

Concept: A law against touchscreens in automobile dashboards
@researchfairy y'know what? i'm all for it!
@researchfairy Actually, I think that the displays really need to go back to the simple analogue displays they used to have. And, while we're at it, recreate the link between display illumination and your head and tail lights being on. Also, why does virtually every vehicle (even automatics) have a rev counter? What function does it serve for a driver? Mechanics and others could possibly use it for diagnostic reasons, but most just plug in a computer and get more information that way.
@researchfairy @float13 I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
@researchfairy seriously! They’re such a safety hazard, and damn annoying to use. Give us tactile buttons and switches damn it!
I feel like there's always a better solution than a touchscreen
But it's often a whatever-good-enough solution
Which is also incidentally the best that can be said of generative AI
@researchfairy bring back dials and buttons
@researchfairy It's not a law but Euro NCAP will only give a 5 star safety rating if a specified list of controls are physical buttons. So many European cars will have fewer touch interfaces soon
@researchfairy you have my vote!
@researchfairy let's make an input device where by definition you can't see what you are clicking on
