New BSD Cafe Service: ntfy Server at BSD Cafe

BSD Cafe now offers an ntfy server for self-hosted push notifications. Use it with Mastodon, Matrix, or any UnifiedPush-compatible service to keep your notifications private - no data passes through Google servers. Available to everyone.

@stefano I currently use #sunup for unified push, do I need to disable it for #nfty to work? I've set the server to https://ntfy.bsd.cafe
Do I need to subscribe to a topic??

Edit: indeed I did need to disable sunup. Seems to be working now

@pfr @stefano you shouldn't have to disable it. you would route whatever notification mechanism to the ntfy endpoint. for reference i also have ntfy and gotify in parallel and its not an issue. as for topic, you'll want to generate a new topic particularly with a strong random string (ntfy can autogen one) to keep your messages separate from other topics. there's also the ability to signup for an account if enabled to protect calls via auth. i work with this system a lot and if stefano doesn't have time happy to help.

To complement your good work, we also have https://push.ngportal.com available to the public as our notification server.

Everyone is welcome to use it.

And for those wanting more, they can check our website https://panafricanssi.org for all ONLINE SERVICES and their statuses.

While some services require no application, such as XMPP, MQTT, and push notifications, many more require collecting some information. Unified communication e g. XMPP(ActivityPub)<=>Email<=>Cloud-Storage and other free hosting require filling out the form at https://link.ngportal.com/online-services.

Together, we are making a positive impact on lives and bringing about some long deserved changes.

@stefano maybe I will look crazy, but I am living that notifications are going just between client and server, so then nfty seems as redundant. I did some quick searching and I am amazed, unfortunately iOS require their APN no other way 😢

@napierge UnifiedPush provides encryption for notifications. For standard notifications sent via Google, there is no specification requiring them to be encrypted, meaning servers can send them unencrypted to Google, which then forwards them to the devices. In other words, in these cases Google can read them. Moreover, many people do not want or cannot use Google services (for example, those using GrapheneOS, etc.), and in such cases UnifiedPush makes even more sense. For Apple it’s even different, and the lack of true multitasking greatly limits its potential.
