I’ve been an Apple fanboy since I first saw a II+ circa 1981, so I do not say this lightly.

If you don’t have an Android device, now might be a good time to start looking for an inexpensive one. You don’t need to switch, but having access to Android software might become useful.

@mkb Except Google is locking down Android and removing the ability to side-load apps and is also both supporting horrific apps and blocking apps they deem “not suitable”

What’s needed is a mobile operating system that’s open and free à la Linux*. Then it needs apps to run on it that folks need. That’s how they get you. Want to do banking or other essential services? Sorry only state approved iOS or Android devices for you!

* Yeah. They exist. I know. 🙂

@lordsplodge I didn’t know Goog was looking at removing sideloading. I wish I could say I am surprised.

Also, when I say Android, I’m also including derivatives like Graphene.

@mkb Graphite is in trouble now that Android Open Source is being constrained. https://9to5google.com/2025/03/26/google-android-aosp-developement-private/

9to5Google

Google will develop Android OS entirely behind closed doors starting next week

Google is adjusting how Android is made, with the AOSP branch moving behind closed doors, leaving the entire OS to be privately developed.

@lordsplodge Surely we’ll see one or two hard forks at that point. Another challenge might be ensuring there are unlocked devices that can run alternative OSs.

@mkb The biggest challenge is gate keeping of mainstream apps (banking, shopping, etc) being locked behind needing the App Store or Google Play services.

That and apathy of most smartphone users.

@lordsplodge

Which is a good reason to plug @mntmn and @librem, among others.

@mkb

I’m ready to pitch my smartphones and reload my desktop PC with Free DOS. Everything is getting out of hand.

@HopelessDemigod There's something to be said for that approach.
