I want a repairable Linux laptop with a battery that will last 10h, and that will suspend reliably.

I want a repairable and reliable Linux phone that lets me phone, text, do banking, navigation, calendaring and email, without snooping on me.

Hardware innovation is dead for laptops and phones.

Now I want technology that won’t backstab me. I want tech that’s reasonably safe to use, that’s stable in time, that gives me a choice, and that adapts to how I want to use it.

The things you are asking for dont need "Innovation", they need management changing their weightings on the engineering department

10h battery runtime are easily possible if someone does not insist the laptop to be razor-blade-thin

Perfect reliable suspension had already worked in Siemens-Nixdorf 486 Laptops from 1994

Reliable, take a look at a Panasonic toughbook and what fights they will survive without scratches 😊 Details like the harddisc packed in silicone padding

The MNT Pocket Reform can go that long if you install an aftermarket battery.

Damn, there's always something.

@thibaultamartin I got a SHIFTphone 8 with SHIIFT-ÖS-L. That's a repairable phone with a manufacturer provided googleless Android that technically meets all your requirements, since Android is built upon Linux, but probably not what you mean by Linux phone ...
The phone is rather expensive for what it offers, since it's also somewhat fair, main hardware drawback is a battery that won't last you a day of intense use, but over all it's pretty decent.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T580, which features both internal and external (replaceable) batteries. The external battery has three different sizes available, I bought one of the medium size and I get 12 to 14 hours work time. I recommend the i5 model, the i7 mostly just creates more heat.

@thibaultamartin and don’t make me recompile drivers (if that’s still a thing I’ve not used Linux since forever)

@thibaultamartin The sad thing is, these are all 100% viable with today's tech. They just don't want to do it because they're not as profitable as the other things.

@thibaultamartin The problem with (banking) apps is that they commonly require you to run operating systems that snoop on you. I consider the mobile phone world essentially lost.
With laptops there is more hope. There's plenty of "no name" laptops resold under brands like Tuxedo. The hardware quality isn't great, they are mildly reparable, and you can get them with decent sized (e.g. 99Wh) batteries.

@thibaultamartin good luck on the phone and banking apps. They made apps so they wouldn't have to do mobile websites. Soooo many banks are in this category. It's horrible and I hate it. We need new banks.

in terms of form factor and peripherals, this seems realistic.

however, in terms of microarchitecture, CHERIoT will probably/hopefully be incorporated into ISAs over the next decade or so, and in terms of security & guarantees about program behavior, it'll be huge. It *might* be more important than the introduction of virtual memory.

Volla Systeme offers several phones (and tabletsl. They have their own OS which is based on Android but also offer Ubuntu Touch as OS. The devices are repairable but I don't know how much.
