I decided to turn the script & slideshow of my presentation last year at Klezcadia into a blog post, even though it's not about my usual American #klezmer stuff.

actually, this is one of those situations where researching a musical group really made me fall out of love with them😲 from having the general idea that it was a dynamic klezmer-art-music fusion group to learning that it was a kinda dubious smoke and mirrors campaign with a whole lotta racism.🤨

@carkner Also, this bit intrigued me:

In 1919, aside from Dutch and German Jews, most were English-speaking Jews from Cochin, Aden or Iraq, with some from Singapore and Malaya…

As the (thoroughly Christian and ethnic Chinese) paternal side of my family is from the region.

It looks like I'll have to track down that Jonathan Goldstein book you cite!

(the connection to my usual #klezmer research is that Joseph Cherniavsky, who features prominently, also had his era as a New York klezmer guy after this, before becoming a mainstream American music guy.)
