Oh wise fediverse, can anyone offer any historical context as to why a large signboard such as this would have been dedicated to detailing weather records in the early 1900s?

[Edit: Answer now below in thread.]

Two men in suits and flatcaps standing on a long board resting at each end on the lower rungs of ladders. One is turning to look at the camera while the other is working with a mahl stick and brush to paint lettering on a large wooden sign that is titled “Felixstowe Weather Record 1904” with three columns below recording “Sunshine”, “Bright Sunshine”, and “Rainfall” for different locations.

From Tony, elsewhere:

"Back in the early 1900s, seaside towns loved to show off their climate. Resorts competed in 'sunshine leagues', putting up big boards with the year’s weather statistics. These boards usually compared hours of bright sunshine (measured with a glass-sphere recorder) and rainfall or rain-days (from rain gauges). The idea was simple: prove to holidaymakers that our town is sunnier and drier than the others, so come here for your summer break."

Simply brilliant!
