The Cat Symphony, one of his most famous drawings, is a humorous depiction of a melody for violins, in which numerous cats move across the paper instead of musical notes.

The composition can be interpreted as a caricatured dig at the music of Richard Wagner, whom the artist did not hold in high regard. Schwind gave the drawing to one of his friends, the violinist Joseph Joachim. The occasion for the gift was Joachim's appointment as director of the Berlin Academy of Music.
