Updated to iOS 26 last night and Liquid Glass is terrible. I’m generally pretty open to change, but this was not a good one.

@span citizen428 you can enable the high contrast mode for it in the settings, so it's much more readable.

@span marcoroth These two settings are widely recommended. Quite telling that we need to enable accessibility features to make this mess usable again.

@span citizen428 I disabled them again, as I quite like the esthetic, but you need a good background for it so it has enough contrast, otherwise it's not as nice.

The more I use this, the more I dislike it. Terrible contrast, gratuitous animations that add no real benefit (as far as I can tell at least) and it looks poorly thought out and unpolished. macOS Tahoe is equally bad, if not worse.

Oh well, I wanted to go back to Linux before they released Apple Silicon, this option became a lot more attractive again once I'm retiring this M1Pro MBP.

@span citizen428 Apple certainly looks set to be revolutionising my computing experience… by driving me to seriously look into alternatives to their ecosystem. I've always thought the artificial separation between macOS and iPads annoying anyway, so I'm thinking I might experiment with using Plasma on a tablet, see how well that works for switching between touch and desktop use. (Annoyingly, the nicest tablets seem to be Microsoft's.)

@pmdj Agree re MS tablets. A few years ago, I bought a Surface during a sale, mostly out of curiosity. I used it as a lightweight travel computer and did development through WSL2, which was a pretty good experience. I still think Windows is terrible (and got worse again with 11), but my wife still regularly uses the Surface and loves it.

Plasma probably works pretty well too, it has some specific settings for tablet mode, which I use on my Steam Deck.

@span citizen428 Yeah, I wouldn't want to subject myself to Windows… I don't know how much fiddling is involved in getting something else running on such a tablet. But as it's based on fairly standard x86 laptop hardware, I suspect it might be easier than trying to use something more desktop-capable than Android on the (relatively rare: Lenovo, Oneplus?) higher-spec ARM Android tablets.
