I read it a little differently: I think he's panicking that the fascist movement is going to see him as problem and turn on him, and this means that the notoriously awful fanbase Fuentes has cultivated are a problem for him twice over.
On the one hand if next week one of his fans kills Ben Shapiro, then Fuentes will face trouble from above; if next week Fuentes changes his tune and stops denouncing other fascists as "globalists", his own fans will probably start seeing him as a sellout and then he might face trouble from below.
So he's doing the only thing he can: trying to both rein in his fans and also preemptively distance himself from them.
