@pluralistic and I bet with nearly every one of them, there is only one thing wrong that could be fixed by replacing one component. Or just a good internal clean used to work wonders.

Does it have a sign that you aren't allowed to take them because only the contractor can do that? My local landfill electronics table does.

@pluralistic They could charge money for sledge-hammer-and-five-minutes rental and have a line around the block.

What was I thinking bringing my LaserJet III to e-waste?? It was still working! And I could still find toner for it!

And let's be honest, it was never going to give me grief about being out of cyan.

@DenOfEarth @fringd @wb2ifs @pluralistic 25 years ago I was a printer technician. One of my favourite printers was the LaserJet III. I have seen one that had printed over 1.3 million pages and after servicing, probably could have gone on to print the same again. They come from an era when things were designed to be maintained, rather than thrown away at the first issue.

@98Percent @DenOfEarth @fringd @wb2ifs @pluralistic Where first issue is often "ran out of ink".

I recall a period about a decade ago (been a while since I bought a new printer) where there were a lot of printers that were cheaper to buy new than buy ink refills for.

Tragic stuff, to be certain.

It does seem like it ought to be possible to make computerized equipment that doesn't need to be as fast or sophisticated as one's gaming rig, like printers, built more for durability than speed.
