Tech accessibility question: do you know of a resource to help an adult use an ipad and browse the Internet safely for the very first time? Something pitched at an absolute first time computer toucher, like we used to see all the time in the 80s: instructions that assume you have never seen a home use computer before.

This person has had almost no exposure to any kind of computer, not even an ATM or a smart phone (think long term incarcerated, but not). They have never been on the Internet.

They need to use the basic functionality of a new ipad and generally stay safe online. They need to learn this very fast because they need to do urgent practical things online. They live overseas.

@coolandnormal Do you have any librarian friends you could check with?

A lot (as far as I understand) of libraries have tech-help-for-seniors programs and I assume that means a solid amount of (a) stock documentation on hand to pull explanations from and (b) firsthand experience about what types of pitfalls to expect and where intuition fails.

So I'd ask if you have any friends who might be involved who you can have a lomg-term ongoing conversation about this, and if there are library resources available near them overseas.

I'll also @jessamyn and hope she's socially okay with that because I don't really have any relationship with her and don't know her boundaries but I do know that she does a lot of that sort of tech help librarianing.

@gaditb @coolandnormal I am socially okay with that! Public libraries might be a good option. iPads are tricky because to use them effectively, you also need things like an email address and access to wifi. I wish they were near me because this is the type of thing I love to go. I usually suggest GCF Global for true "getting started" stuff.

@coolandnormal Also: what sorts of "safe on the internet" are you thinking? You'll probably have a few, and they'll probably each have their own partially-independent set of instructions.

Off the top of my head:

- safe malware-wise?
- safe financially -- will be able to do financial interactions through the internet with a minimum amount of getting scammed?
- safe informationally -- will be able to evaluate information and sources enough that they won't fall victim to misinformation or conspiricizing rabbitholes?
- safe emotionally -- they'll be able to match the emotional level and investment of other people they're interacting with, so they won't be off-guard and hurt by a mismatch? Also they won't be emotionally maniulated into dependence in culty ways?
- safe socially -- they'll be able to recognize social expectations and understand the stability of different relationships enough to not find themselves isolated or hurt, or to inadvertantly hurt other people?
- etc.

@gaditb these are excellent points about safety. I think they will most need protection regarding information privacy, secure financial services, and malware.

They probably don't need to be protected so much from trolling/ negative online relationships, conspiracy rabbit holes and extreme material. I think they would prefer to navigate these hazards themselves, maybe with a bit of support.

They are excellent at information privacy. They do need to learn how an ipad (and Internet presence) has potential to leak information and how to manage that.
