I wish you could filter out reviews from westerners on #HappyCow or other review sites for #Asian #vegetarian food.

It's a generalization, but can't trust most of them them. Too many mediocre, overpriced restaurants in touristy areas in Japan or elsewhere, catering to western #vegetarians, getting glowing reviews.

@ncoca I have a theory I developed as a vegetarian. There are vegan restaurants and restaurants that happen to be vegan. Vegan restaurants are very "crunchy" and tend to have overpriced food that is not tasty. They tend to serve Western white people. They are like McDonald's for vegan tourists. But the second category are good places (often local foods) cooked vegetarian or vegan in creative ways. I wish I could filter out the former and look for the later.

@seanbala Exactly! I wish I could find the latter more easily too. There's a few places I used to like in Japan that became too "popular" with westerners, and their quality went way down (even as they got more crowded).

@ncoca A group of people being ignorant about how good food can taste is probably less correlated to race or origin, and more correlated to experience. Lots of restaurants here cater to the Japanese palate, too, which (in general) differs significantly from a lot of the rest of Asia.

@tokyo_0 It's really more a vegetarian thing - Japan stands out for not really having much of a native vegetarian culture, unlike a lot of Asia. Finding out what vegetarian-friendly places that cater to Asians rather than westerners is tough, wish it was easier!

@ncoca It is strange how little vegetarian cuisine there is here given the prominence of Buddhism. You'd think there would be more (even if the flavours would probably still be different to what you're looking for). Maybe if there are restaurants in the areas with large Asian populations they'd be more authentic.

@tokyo_0 I've found a few - usually within Asian ethnic enclaves, and sometimes not even listed on Happy Cow.
