"... I used to study medicine, I was training to be a doctor. But I couldn't actually afford my rent because it was London, so I had to work in marketing on the side. Then I started to really get into marketing to the point where I actually left medicine ..."

His job could have been saving people's lives, but instead it's persuading them they want stuff. That's heartbreaking.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I agree with Adbusters. Not only are reputation laundering jobs like "marketing", "advertising" and "PR" a waste of creative talent, they're all forms of psychological-abuse-as-a-service.

Their job is manipulating people's thinking in the interests of a third party, which is a form of abuse.

Imagine if all the money spent on laundering an organisation's reputation was instead used to improve the UX of their services. Especially public services.

@strypey I’ve read studies that claimed to show that, in contrast to the electrification of the early 20th century, the rise of the internet has done nothing for overall productivity (much as I hate that word)
My hypothesis is that the internet reduced the cost of marketing to almost nothing, so it becomes much much more profitable to spend a little effort on a crap product then market the shit out of it.
The talent of a generation, wasted on marketing :(

Great start. I saw a documentary featuring a city in Brazil whose radical mayor banned all outdoor advertising. It might have been in The Corporation (2003)?
