We had heard from a volunteer of the cat team that a Maine Coon tomcat was coming to the shelter. After the death of our beloved Maine Coon tomcat Smoky three years ago, we had actually decided not to take in any more long-haired Maine Coon cats, but of course we still wanted to see this tomcat, as representatives of this breed very rarely come to our shelter.

When the owners brought Teddy to the shelter, we were there. Talking to the owners, we found out that he was only 8 months old. The husband of the young couple has to go to the hospital for 3 months and then spend a long time in rehab. Since the wife works during the day, Teddy would have been alone all day in a one-and-a-half-room apartment for a very long time. Maine Coons are very people-oriented, and since then, it was mainly the man who had taken care of Teddy.

Once all the formalities had been completed, we took Teddy to a cat box in the adoption area. Since he had been vaccinated and kept as a house cat, he was spared the quarantine period. However, it quickly became clear that he would not like it there. He seemed stressed and was suspicious of his animal companion. He sat in the corner, looking miserable.

It was around this time that my partner and I exchanged our first glances. We both agreed that we didn't want a long-haired Maine Coon cat, and certainly not a kitten, but I could see in her eyes that she had already made up her mind. And so had I! Fate took its course.
