I know PixelFed exists but it's all just text and video and images at the end of the day - so what if the Mastodon interface just looked like Instagram and then you could sign in using your existing Mastodon account... a concept:

This is just hacked together real quick, but should I work on this to make it a real thing?

@dansup@mastodon.social @jesseplusplus@mastodon.social and I are planning on doing some work together re: private group discussions down the line. Should be interesting!

Since Pop is a Mastodon fork(?) it'd be compatible with whatever changes are made to Decodon/frequency too.

@matt love it, but 2 cents:

As a photographer I'm really picky about the stuff I want to show on a IG/portfolio style page. Because we photographers use those things to show our work around.

Which means, I'm probably not using this on my Mastodon account because of screenshots and other non-portfolio work.

But: that could be fixed by including or excluding specific hashtags. (or a gallery feature of Mastodon which would be rad).

@sturmsucht That's an interesting challenge but I would imagine that if there was an app that looked and felt like an Instagram alternative then photographers signing up for the first time would use it just how you described.

There could be special features within the UI, such a giving users the option to curate their profile (your own posts that you've bookmarked) but that would only show for users of this new UI, not all Mastodon users. Does that make sense? 😅

@matt Ah, I came in from the "this is an alternative IG-like view of your Mastodon feed" perspective and completely missed the "same base as Mastodon, but new separate IG-like app/service people could sign-up to" view.

For my understanding: the intention is a separate alternative photo centered view/app/service of a mastodon account, right? So, photo features are bound to Mastodon's image boundaries (like amount of images per post), but pimped with some ✨ 🌈 UI beauty 🌈 ✨?

@matt Thank you.
So every Mastodon user would be impacted somehow. That was my concern 🙂 (although I understand this would be configurable for everyone)
Personally, I hate feeds whose main interaction consists in scrolling down endlessly... (turning people into red fishes)
Mastodon's UI looks complex at first, with these 4 columns. But it's well thought, and much better than X's UI when one starts to understand how it works. So many possibilities to interact with it! And escape endless feeds...
@matt Awesome. I posted a while back that we needed an app with texting mode, image mode, and video mode with options specific to the mode you are using, then we could choose how we wanted to experience Mastodon and the Fediverse. On reg Mastodon web, you have media mode only for the Federated live feed, already.
