So what are everyone’s excuses for Tim Cook’s behavior this time?

Wake up. He’s an overt Trump supporter, and has been the entire time.

@marcoarment It’s clear that Tim Cook and Apple are now not just Nazi Sympathizers but SUPPORTERS. They will fight the E.U., they will fight EPIC, they will fight Massimo, they will fight every developer tooth and nail for pennies under the table but the world’s largest company won’t challenge tariffs in court that are being levied for “national security” purposes? Apple could lead this charge and help shut this all down but instead they are complicit.

@marcoarment I find that hard to believe. The citizens of the US elected Trump. Cook, being good at GR, is doing what he finds necessary to preserve Apple's business.

To me, this says more about the US and its government than Tim.

@marcoarment I'd been using Apple hardware since 1993 and made the decision to exit the Apple ecosystem back in February and I'm glad I did. Anyone can do it. Same for Google and Amazon. Didn't use Microsoft.

Computing is entirely possible without them. It takes a bit of effort to detangle from iCloud, etc but it's well worth it.

GNU/Linux is much better than I'd previously thought. It's actually been fantastic.

But alas, in America, 💰 is the religion that sits above everything else.

@marcoarment i’m no Tim Cook booster but I’ll echo what at least one other person has said in the thread: in an economy that prioritises returns to shareholders, Cook has no choice. Particularly since under Trump, the US has become a bit of a mafia-state. If Cook doesn’t do it, the Board of Directors would sack him and replace him with someone who will.

@marcoarment I'm old enough to remember communism in my country (Poland). This gives me vibes of how adults would act in public to avoid trouble. You have to face it, the US is now run by an autocrat who's old and senile and faces no consequences for his actions.
If your company was big enough to get his attention and he said he would ruin you on a whim, what would you do? And I do mean ruin. If Trump keeps crazy tarrifs on China AND India, iPhones are going to cost 50% more in the US.

@marcoarment The internet is an amazing place. I’m instantly surrounded by the bravest CEOs of multi trillion dollar companies. People who know no fear as their company and employees are targeted by arguably the most powerful autocrat in the world.

I’d like to think I’d’ve made a different call in this scenario. But limber up before making the reach that he is a full on Trump supporter.

@marcoarment He’s pandering to get the company tariff and regulatory favor. He CLEARLY knows Trump’s a nutter. That gift is soaked in empty sycophancy Trump will fall for hook, line and sinker. A lot of people would suffer if Cook didn’t play the game. U.S. including us even if we could afford a 50% markup from tariffs, most people can’t. Pension funds can’t afford AAPL tanking because Tim makes a show of rebellion.

The excuses are far worse than reality, in my opinion. If he's cozying up to like ... ensure supply chains, or something, that is infinitely more execrable than his actions reflecting his actual politics.

I really hate parsing this sort of shit, but would you categorize him on the same level as, say, Musk, Thiel, Bezos, or Zuckerberg?

I don't see him as a fascist ideologue, but more of a shameless capitalist who is willing to disgrace himself if he thinks it will help the business.

This is not meant as a defense or justification. I have zero respect for anyone who prioritizes wealth over human dignity.
