William Grimm notes the futility of the choice now of a few US Catholic bishops to try to exercise moral leadership after the bishops as a body did all but stand on their heads to place Trump in the White House. As he notes, under their leadership, many US Catholics were led to support Trump in two elections — in which some 6 in 10 white Catholics voted for Trump.

Now, belatedly and rather than lamenting and admitting their abdication of pastoral leadership, a few bishops are filing lawsuits to try to curb the cruelty of the administration, its attacks on immigrants, its destruction of aid programs, etc.
Too little, too late, and entirely unsystemic, this piecemeal approach of filing lawsuits. Grimm says,
