Meta did this? Mastodon gGmbH’s partner Meta at the Social Web Foundation?

But aren’t Mastodon gGmbH the good guys? I can’t see how they’d ever partner with Meta if this were true.

No, no, this must be fake news.

(Otherwise, what would it say about Mastodon gGmbH and the Social Web Foundation?)

@aral

This foundation makes zero sense. Claims to be for the "open future for social networks" but then has Meta a partner, has socials on X and Threads (but somehow not Mastodon (???)). Meta and X are 100% antithetical to this goal, it's all proprietary garbage. They’re enemies, not friends.

Open web, or Meta. Can’t have both.

@Mastodon Can you confirm you’re part of this foundation or is this accusation false? If it is true: When will you leave it?

@Wuzzy @aral @Mastodon Here is the link to the launch announcement.

Under "Industry Support", Meta is the fourth one down.

That alone was enough for me to immediately write this organization off back when it was announced.

Meta wants to use the Fediverse as another avenue to farm AI training data, and user data. Their involvement in this organization is simply to figure out how they can do that, and any other ways they can loot the Fediverse for anything they can.

@schrotthaufen@Mastodon@aral@Hache@Wuzzy@fgraver this is why we need to make people understand the very bad influence in our society (trade) and show them viable solutions. @trom is a project that does that in detail and the directory.trade-free.org is a place that tries to list solutions that are truly nice, "ethical" and helpful to others instead of having the profit incentive in mind.
