The visibility of homeless people on street corners, begging for food and housing, is an obvious sign that our economy is failing. I've seen a large increase in the number of people begging at intersections in my suburbs far outside of Chicago, steadily increasing since Covid lockdowns ended.

Dictators need to hide the homeless in order to hide their economic failures. (Also, without an address, the homeless can't vote, making them easier targets.)

Republicans have always preferred the more expensive "prisons and insane asylums" response to #homelessness , rather than the less-expensive and proven #HousingFirst solutions.

Much of this current White House statement on the subject tries to forestall and negate #HousingFirst discussions by demonizing the homeless and portraying them all as either insane or addicts, rather than just signs of an economy that is failing to meet the basic needs of millions of its citizens.

@dangillmor - They will deserve what they get for their actions.
From IMDb: Deep Space 9 - Past Tense, Part I The Defiant has arrived at Earth and Sisko, Bashir and Dax are beamed to the surface, where they will address the Starfleet Symposium in San Francisco on the situation in the Gamma Quadrant. But they never arrive. The three find themselves in San Francisco in the year 2024. They have no ID and Bashir and Sisko are arrested and put in a "concentration" camp-like Sanctuary District.

I do not excuse this EO, but as with so much that is happening, some large measure of blame rests with those who have held power for the last few years.

No one who lives in a community of any size can deny the dystopia of the mentally ill, drug addicted, homeless occupying and degrading public space.

This is not acceptable to anyone, and yet everyone has failed to fix it. So the problem still exists and now a most barbaric "fix" is proposed.

Nature hates a vacuum.

The far right thinks incarceration is a social safety net, and read Ayne Rand so they believe luck has nothing to do with their billions. They are superior and deserve their luxuries, anyone who struggles to make ends meet is inferior and perhaps subhuman.

The rich of this age overwhelmingly have minds full of poison, and they aggressively work tirelessly to some day own everything in the world. 'All' won't be enough to fill the hole in their soul, ever thirsting for more.

@dangillmor Jesus, these people are evil. Trump's (Miller's) new executive order "[s]hifting homeless individuals into long-term institutional settings for humane treatment through the appropriate use of civil commitment will restore public order."
