@Vanquixote @senficon Because GitHub is "too broke", those poor fellas, they want FOSS devs to be paid by the taxes from some other country.
@senficon while I agree in general 2 things make this taste bad:
- GitHub / Microsoft is a deeply US-based and focused company with deep ties to the gov and intel communities there. I do not want them involved in any way in European governance
- removing a made in EU focus is not in the strategic intreats of the continent. We should try to remove transfer of wealth to the us as much as possible

I support the idea Microsoft is not a voice I want to support in European policy.
@senficon Funny coming from a company, which is, and especially also its parent company, is heavily opposed to sovereign technology and try to monopolize everything.

@ParadeGrotesque Many open source basic technologies do not lend themselves to commercialization and are not maintained by companies. Startup and scale-up funding has its use cases, but it’s no substitute for open source maintenance funding.

Then you are not talking about a sovereign tech fund, which has a profit motive. You are talking about an open source maintenance fund, a bit like the Linux Foundation.
I would love Europe to invest in open source, but too many private interests, both in Europe and in open source, will probably prevent this from happening.
@ParadeGrotesque I first proposed an open source maintenance fund to promote digital sovereignty in Germany in 2020. https://www.heise.de/meinung/Edit-Policy-Wo-bleibt-Europas-Open-Technology-Fund-4926188.html The @sovtechfund started operations in 2022, funded by the German government. It has always been about open source maintenance.
