I’ve been doing some thinking on how the #fediverse, the #opensocialweb etc relate to other causes, like #privacy, or #dataportability, or #digitalsovereignty, even the #righttorepair. It appears that ultimately they all want similar things for the users of technology:

More Digital Freedom.

Some people have been using this term for a long time, I’m thinking of adopting it to describe the broader cause. Thoughts?

@j12t I think that data portability, digital sovereignty and right to repair are clearly related to the open web, but I'm not sure about privacy. I've often wondered if privacy is actually antithetical to the tenants of the web. Information wants to be free, it seems at least dangerous to mix things you want to keep private and the global information sharing system that is the Internet. Privacy seems to belong to the Crypto world.
@j12t @andypiper @btfree fair enough. I’m not suggesting you concede it to them but to acknowledge that there are other valid notions of freedom that are probably not what you mean. More importantly, I was only suggesting it is not an appropriate summary of “the broader cause” for everyone, so be careful throwing it around as if it is. Expect disagreement or skepticism if you don’t use more nuanced language.
