I've got lots of feelings about the cuts to essential services.
This is not the fault of those cuts. Blame the architects of chaos for things for which they are blameworthy. Shout and scream it.
This is not one of them.

NWS did their job. Those that are still there are keeping the torches lit.

Did budget cuts play a role?
No. In this particular case, we have seen absolutely nothing to suggest that current staffing or budget issues within NOAA and the NWS played any role at all in this event. Anyone using this event to claim that is being dishonest. There are many places you can go with expressing thoughts on the current and proposed cuts. We’ve been very vocal about them here. But this is not the right event for those takes.
@jeridansky W. Nim Kidd, the chief of the Texas Division of Emergency Management, said that the original forecast from the National Weather Service predicted significantly less rain than what actually fell.
@MikeElgan Sure. But the forecasts got revised over time, as is totally normal, given how hard these storms are to forecast. The warnings went out in plenty of time, per all reports.
@jeridansky Rick Spinrad, who used to run NOAA, pointed out that cuts to federal staff probably made it harder for emergency managers to get the word out in time. He said the Weather Service did send out alerts, but things might have broken down when it came to getting those warnings to the public.
@MikeElgan Especially when members of the public, like campers at Camp Mystic, were not allowed to bring cell phones — which would have hopefully gotten the emergency alert broadcasts which were sent out.
