Mitting will stay in post for the 'tranche 3' hearings running from Oct 2025 to Mar 2026, covering the final years of the Special Demonstration Squad. After that, he'll write an interim report on the Squad, then leave.
The Home Office will appoint a new Chair to see out the rest of the Inquiry. That'll cover Tranche 4, examining the other main spycops unit, the National Public Order Intelligence Unit (1999-2010) which deployed the likes of Mark Kennedy. No dates have been announced for that yet
Mitting is the Inquiry's second Chair. The first, Lord Pitchford, stepped down in 2017 for health reasons. The Inquiry was announced in 2014 & was originally scheduled to publish its final report in 2018. It has cost over 拢100m so far.
Though much of the delay has been due to stalling tactics by the Met, we're broadly glad that they're not rushing the actual hearings. Every spycop should be held to account, every victim deserves the fullest possible disclosure.
