The holidays were never just about celebration for Black people.
They were about survival, protection, and creating warmth in cold conditions.
Joy didn鈥檛 erase oppression, it interrupted it.
And that legacy lives on.
'For black plp 100-50 yrs ago, Christmas was complicated. Joy existed, but so did fear. In the U.S., the holiday season unfolded under Jim Crow, lynching, and segregation. In Africa and the Caribbean, it arrived under colonial rule. Celebration had boundaries.'
