The holidays were never just about celebration for Black people.
They were about survival, protection, and creating warmth in cold conditions.
Joy didn鈥檛 erase oppression, it interrupted it.
And that legacy lives on.
'For black plp 100-50 yrs ago, Christmas was complicated. Joy existed, but so did fear. In the U.S., the holiday season unfolded under Jim Crow, lynching, and segregation. In Africa and the Caribbean, it arrived under colonial rule. Celebration had boundaries.'

I appreciate the rationale behind encouraging humor and whimsy at #NoKings protests tomorrow. Nobody wants to give Trump regime or counter-protesters any excuse for going violent. But I will still be bringing my anger, my disgust, and my horror at the regime and all those who have enabled it and are continuing to enable it. As a woman, I am especially put off by demands that I make my wholly warranted fury more palatable by cloaking it in humor.

Robert E. Lee's home, now Arlington National Cemetery, became a final resting place for Union soldiers in 1864. We should follow the Union example.
