For a few years I had an office in the Frank Gehry-designed Stata Center at MIT. Here are some photos I took on a sunny autumn day using a film camera in 2005. This building had a lot of problems but it definitely made a statement. #architecture #FrankGehry #filmphotography

A view along a paved footpath with trees on the side of the road and a cluster of modern buildings jumbled along the other side of the path

A small ampitheatre in front of a cluster of modern buildings of various shapes, some brick, some reflective, under a blue sky with white clouds. A few small trees are planted around the ampitheatre

Rest in Power #FrankGehry, the avatar of fin de siecle technoutopian aesthetics.

Your buildings aimed to transform my hometown NYC. You were thwarted by 9/11, by the Great Recession, by banality.

I miss the optimism that inspired and was inspired by your designs. We didn't deserve it.

Gehry model. Gehry had hoped to do the Lower East Side what he did with Bilbao, Spain. His proposed $678 million design was going to include a gigantic titanium cloud with a glass underbelly over the East River. The New York Times wrote the proposed plan was a “polymorphous, 400-foot-tall building designed by Frank Gehry on Piers 9, 13 and 14, south of the Brooklyn Bridge in Lower Manhattan.” Outside the ribboned building, he proposed six acres of open space that would’ve connected the Old Slip platform to Maiden Lane.
