What a week! It's been unreal. It felt apocalyptic. Personally, this is the worst I have experienced since the 2004 Asian Tsunami. A criminal act on the government's part to neglect the very basics (more on that later). We were hit by Cyclone Ditwah. We were without electricity since Thursday evening. As a result of the power outage, mobile and land phone networks, and Internet connections were dead in no time. Apparently mobile phone companies had decided long ago to make an extra buck by ditching batteries and power generators at their towers. In the midst of the unfolding chaos people were cut off from the rest of the world, from essential services and news in general.
We are safe. Thousands of others are not.
Sri Lanka: Over 330 dead from Cyclone Ditwah, hundreds of thousands impacted :

#ClimateDiary “We have nothing left” Severe floods in Asia kill over 1,000.
The floods and mudslides in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand in the aftermath of #CycloneDitwah are truly devastating. Yet over here, in the UK, they barely register in the news or people’s consciousness. I have not even brought them up myself in conversation. It is terrible, where we are at.
Over 150 deaths, over 200 missing, and over 830,000 people affected, Sri Lanka is still not out of the weather and safety emergency. With landslides and floods, these numbers will continue to rise, especially as rescue operations reach some unreachable areas. Over 122,000 are in 919 safety locations.
Following the terror attacks in 2019, pandemic in 2020, economic crisis in 2022, the resilient people of this beautiful country have always fought for survival every step of the way. We ousted a corrupt, incompetent regime, democratically elected against corruption and against weaponized racism. We were on a steady path to recovery, exceeding IMF expectations. This is a gut punch. But, this too, we will survive! 🇱🇰
Our generous people in unaffected areas are organizing relief donations, and countries like India, USA, Japan, Maldives are extending helping hands. But we will need all the help. 🙏🏾
