A former French surgeon by the name Joel Le Scouarnec was found guilty of sexual assaulting and raping 299 patients, mostly children, between 1989 and 2014.
Why isn’t this bigger news?
Misogyny in medicine is a huge problem, and this case provides a perfect example.
He was convicted of child pornography in 2005 and yet somehow allowed to continue practicing medicine and operating on children.
He abused them while they were under anesthesia and/or sedated. He kept detailed journals of what he did to them. He even assaulted his own nieces.
Like Gisele Pelicot, many of his victims didn’t know what had been done to them until the police investigation uncovered the proof.
They will carry the scars for the rest of their lives.
He was sentenced to twenty years in prison because that’s the maximum allowed under French law. He will be eligible for parole in 6.
Many of Gisele’s rapists didn’t even serve time.
What are we doing? These were children, and they were abused by someone taking advantage of power and access. Someone they should have been able to trust. Someone who took an oath to do no harm.
As Gisele said, shame must change sides.
Tonight my thoughts and prayers are with those he harmed. They’re with all of us who’ve endured assault at the hands of men who hurt us because our patriarchal society taught them they were OWED access to us. To our bodies. To sex. To any part of us they want.
We do not owe you anything. And we won’t be silent any longer.
We will keep speaking out. We will keep demanding accountability. We will fight for the safety of all women and children and an end to the patriarchy.
We won’t go gently.
